This week Joe’s guests were:
Lyndsey Haight, Executive Director of Our Neighbors’ Table in Amesbury. There are over 6,000 people in the service area of ONT that are food insecure. Joe and Lyndsey talked about the work of ONT to support them. We also talked about a grant received from the Cummings Foundation, mobile food distribution, the Summer Lunch Program, and more!
Quentin Callewaert, local musician and guitarist extraordinaire. Quentin will be the opening act for the Americana Rhythm & Roots Festival, a free concert on the Newburyport Waterfront, July 1, 3:30 – 8:00 pm. Also appearing at the Festival will be Marcia BallNikki Hill, and the Lonely Heartstring Band.  Quentin chatted with Joe and Gregg and played a bunch of music for us.

Parks, City Council & Buttermilk After Dark

This week Joe’s guests were:
Lisë Reid, Director of Newburyport Parks Department – we talked about the 23 City-owned parks (over 100 acres), how the Parks Department has taken on additional responsibilities over the past few years, how the Parks Department budget, though larger than in the past, still needs help, and the role of the Newburyport Parks Conservancy.And we talked about the upcominng Americana Rhythm & Roots Festival.
 
Jared Eigerman, Newburyport Ward 2 City Councilor – We talked about, what else, the garage, Waterfront West, the central waterfront, and more.
Ashley Bush, Owner of Buttermilk Baking Co. – Top of the list was Buttermilk After Dark, a semi-regular, Friday night pop-up extension of Buttermilk, where they serve off-menu items from the back door of the bakery.  Lots of delicious fun. Watch for the dates and menu on their Facebook page.

This week we broadcast from the deck of the Schooner Adventure to help celebrate Newburyport’s Maritime Days.

Ken Jackman, from the Custom House Maritime Museum, who discussed the events happening during Maritime Days, the decision to bring in two tall ships (the Schooner Adventure and the Schooner Alabama), and more! (2:21)
Mayor Donna Holaday who discussed what’s involved in planning the arrival of tall ships to Newburyport, the festivities, and what we can look forward to in Newburyport during the upcoming summer. (11:19)
Capt. Dale Groff & Capt. Willy Leathers, of the Schooner Alabama and Schooner Adventure, who talked about the ships, the history of the ships, and the tours of the ships available during Maritime Days. (21:14)
Kevin Hunt, the Director of Veterans’ Services for the cities of Amesbury & Newburyport and Towns of Merrimac & Salisbury, who talked about Memorial Day activities and events in the area, and the Newburyport Memorial Brick program. (28:54)
Kim Turner & Jen Collins, from the Newburyport Parks Commission and the Americana Rhythm & Roots Festival, about Newburyport’s 23 parks and the upcoming projects this summer. We also talked about the Rhythm & Roots Festival, that supports the Parks Conservancy. (41:59)

“Leapers” of Faith, Wildlife & The Deck

IC School, “Talking” Houses & Plumfest

This week Joe’s guests were:

Mary Reardon, Principal, Immaculate Conception School, which is celebrating its 135th Anniversary. First, we talked a bit about the history of the school, the school today, and in the future with Mary’s upcoming retirement. Mary also shared details about the 135th Anniversary Gala to be held May 19.
Jack Santos, the organizer of If This House Could Talk. We talked about the concept of the project and how residents may take part.  Local homeowners will display a sign describing something about the history of, or an interesting fact about their house during Yankee Homecoming.  Most of all, the idea behind the project is to get people interacting in the real world.  A video of the interview was streamed via Facebook here.
Cynthia Keefe & Kevin Kelley, the founders of Plumfest, joined us to talk about the Island-wide music festival.  This year 80 musical acts will play in/on driveways, yards, porches & decks on Plum Island on May 20. So, don’t miss it!

Student Theater, Choral Society & Councilor Vogel

This week Joe’s guests were:

John Budzyna, Paige Lichty, Theo Roberts & Wade Turner, from Acting Out Productions, about their upcoming performances of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “The New Little Red Riding Hood.” John will be directing. Paige will play “Red.” Theo and Wade will each play Charlie. We heard from these seasoned young actors about their theater experience, what they like about acting, and much more, while Joe demonstrated his vast ignorance of theater terms.

Penny Lazarus & Dr. George Case, from the Newburyport Choral Society (Facebook), about their upcoming performance of Annelies, a moving oratorio based on the story of Anne Frank. This is the 83rd season for the Newburyport Choral Society, and it’s clear why its audience comes from far and wide for these performances.

Bruce Vogel, Newburyport City Councilor at Large. Councilor Vogel shared his views in an open and frank discussion about the relationship between the branches of local government, the work of the Council and a variety of topics.

Pow Wow Cleanup & The Daily News

E.J. was kind enough to play some fiddle for us, and we talked about the need for cleaning up the Pow Wow River (they’ve actually found, not 1, but 2 safes in the river!) Richard Lodge, Managing Editor of The Daily News of Newburyport (Facebook). We talked about the decisions made in the news room and by the editorial staff (especially important in an local election year), and the newspaper’s staff.
